Your map to the best electricity rates in Texas
In Texas, a majority of cities and towns have energy choice, or the right to choose an electricity provider. How do you know if your neighborhood is one of them? Electricity is deregulated in the service areas of these electric utility companies:
- AEP Texas Central
- AEP Texas North
- CenterPoint Energy
- Oncor Electric Delivery
- Texas-New Mexico Power
Within these areas, there are hundreds of energy providers to choose from, including well-known companies TXU Energy and Reliant Energy alongside newcomers such as Bulb Energy and Chariot Energy. Add in bill credits, free periods, green energy, or tiered pricing and the options for an energy plan are endless, which is both good and bad.
Whether you’ve lived in Texas for years or just moved to town, choosing the electric rate that’s right for your home (and that doesn’t always mean the cheapest!) can be confusing. That’s where Atlas comes in.
Compare energy plans with Atlas
We’re not in the business of matching you to an electric rate. Instead, we focus on matching an electric rate to you - and that’s a big difference! We’ve seen more energy marketplaces than we can count, and with Atlas we’ve set out to make sure we’re not just another one of them.
We don’t just focus on the sticker price. When you sign up with us, we’ll ask you for details to help us match the best option to you. It’s a little more work, but it pays off in the long run with an electricity plan that will work just as well in April as it does in August.
Considering the average Texas bill in April 2019 was $95 while in August it was $196, finding a rate that suits all seasons is more important than ever. Let our algorithm do the math for you so you’re prepared for any changes life throws your way. Enter your address to get started, or find your city below.
Frequently asked questions
What is deregulated energy?
Deregulated energy means that any company can enter the energy market and start selling energy plans to consumers. In Texas, electricity is deregulated but natural gas is not. Electricity is deregulated for both residents and businesses.
What this means, in short, is that Texas electric utility companies (the companies who maintain power lines and fix outages) do not sell electricity plans to residents. Instead, many electric providers compete for consumers’ business. You have the power to choose any provider that serves your area. Your energy will be delivered by your area’s utility company regardless of which provider you choose.
How does Atlas work?
Like many other marketplaces, we work with energy providers across Texas to show our users the best possible selection of plans in one place. What makes us different from other marketplaces is how we work from there.
With other marketplaces, you compare plans, sign up with your provider, and go on your way. It’s on you to choose the right plan. At Atlas, we like to offer a little more support. Here’s how:
- We'll ask for information. This includes your latest bill, whether you have a swimming pool, and all sorts of stuff that will affect your electricity usage.
- We’ll calculate your usage for every month and check it instantly against every plan we sell.
- We’ll show you plans that will work best throughout the year (including the ones with the best savings, of course!)
- We’ll keep working on your behalf. That’s right. Even after you choose a plan, we’ll keep track of things to make sure you’re on track. If we find a better deal, we’ll help you switch.
We built Atlas to help our users make the most of their energy choice. We aren’t here to make a quick sale. We’re in it for the long run, and for as long as you need us.
Do I have to pay to use Atlas?
No. Atlas is available at no charge to our users. How? We get paid by the providers you see on our site. These providers know that Atlas was built to help consumers and we’re going to recommend what’s best for you - not what’s best for them.
Why would providers agree to this? They trust that the visibility they get from our site will help their values shine through to prospective customers. They believe in their plans and are willing to be put under our - and your - microscope.
Do I have to create an account?
Yes - but that’s nothing to shy away from! This is what makes Atlas unique and allows us to help you for the long term. With your account, we’re able to keep your needs in mind as we add new plans or get new offers from providers. If the algorithm finds a better plan for you than what we originally recommended, we can let you know so you can save even more.
You can still look at the plans available for your address without an account, but you won’t be able to sign up for one.
