About First Choice Power
First Choice Power has been providing electricity to consumers in the state of Texas for more than 70 years. In 2011, the company was acquired by Direct Energy, one of the country’s largest energy suppliers. In July 2020, NRG Energy proposed an acquisition of Direct Energy. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
In Texas, First Choice Power offers residents a variety of options, including fixed rate plans, no-contract prepaid plans, month-to-month plans, and plans with free weekend electricity. First Choice Power electric prices can vary widely due to these different plan types. The company offers electricity to a large portion of the state, including:
What’s the best First Choice Power plan?
First Choice Power plans offers a variety of options to meet the needs of all Texans, including plans with 12-month, 24-month, or 36-month terms. Some of First Choice Power’s most popular plans are:
- You Got This 36 - With this 36-month fixed rate plan, you won’t have to worry about seasonal fluctuations for years to come.
- You Got This Free Weekends 24 - On this 24-month plan, you won’t pay for your electric usage on weekends. The free period begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and runs through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.
- You Got This Green 12 - This plan offers a shorter 12-month term with the added bonus of all renewable energy.
All three of these plans have an early termination fee of $135. Not all plans are available in all areas, and choosing the right plan for you will depend heavily on your energy usage. When you enter your usage into Atlas, we’ll do the math to make sure you find the right fit.
Is First Choice Power a good company?
At Atlas, we’re dedicated to only working with providers we know you can trust. That’s why we’ve devised a rating system to make sure we stay on top of their performance. Here’s how First Choice Power looks, out of 5 possible stars:
First Choice Power rating: 3.8 stars
First Choice Power offers customers stellar online accessibility, with bill pay, chat, and usage alerts. Additionally, with over 70 years in the business, First Choice Power knows the energy market inside and out. A satisfaction guarantee tops off the company’s list of benefits. The overall score was brought down slightly by a 2 out of 5 on the Public Utility Commission of Texas complaint scorecard.
Which provider has the cheapest Texas electricity rates?
It’s hard to say which company offers the cheapest rates as this changes every day. Plus, a plan with the cheapest rate doesn’t automatically mean it will give you the cheapest bill. For example, if you’re home a lot on weekends, a plan like the You Got This Free Weekends 24 may offer you a better overall bill than a plan with a lower rate all week long.
Many providers show you their rates based on 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh). But if you use 2,000 kWh, your rate could be completely different. That's why at Atlas, we don’t look at a snapshot of your usage. We look at the entire year and how your usage changes with the seasons. We enter information you give us into a custom algorithm and test it against a variety of plans. The plans we recommend to you will work for you both now and later on down the road.
